The inspiration for Fruitbearer Publishing came four years after self-publishing the book by the same name. Find out more about Candy and Drew Abbott and their company, Fruitbearer Publishing. In addition to independently publishing Gavin Goodfellow and the Burnt Swamp Trilogy, Fruitbearer offers a friendly starting place for other budding authors. If you are considering self-publishing and don't know where to start, let Candy and her Fruitbearer team point you in the right direction.
The Fruitbearer Marketing Team
Learn more about the behind-the-scenes talent responsible for bringing Gavin to life:
- Diane Cook
Diane serves as Marketing Consultant for Fruiutbearer Publishing, and no one is better equipped with the vision. The Lord brought her alongside Candy Abbott from the inception to capture the vision of Gavin Goodfellow. Diane is both springboard and sounding board for "all things Gavin," from brainstorming plots, settings, and dialogue to marketing and PR strategies. With her "Word Warriors" ministry, she is front and center in the spiritual warfare arena in equipping Gavin and troops.
- Karen Gritton
Gritton Productions is Fruitbearer Publishing's "Meeting and Special Events Planner." With Karen's eye for detail and creativity, her on-site management allows the Fruitbearer Team to relax and enjoy our events (i.e., Gavin's Launch Party held at Delmarva Christian High School) and focus on our guests. Consider contracting with Gritton Productions for your next event, anywhere in the nation!
- Luke Jimminik
Luke, a steadfast Christian, is a California resident and the composer of Gavin’s original music. Visit this link to hear other samples of his music and learn more about him.
- Laura E. Pritchett
Although most of Laura’s commissioned artwork is in pastels, she also works in oils, watercolor, pen and ink, pencil, charcoal, acrylic, and colored pencil. She enjoys the challenges and variety of each medium and has never been able to choose a favorite. She credits the Lord for her talent which first appeared at the age of three. By age thirteen, she painted her first commissioned portrait and thus began her career. With the exception of the cover design for The Lure of Burnt Swamp, Laura is responsible for the magnificent renderings of all the Gavin Goodfellow artwork.

Nancy Rue, Author/Mentor
Prolific, award-winning author Nancy Rue is best known for her young adult series (Lily, Sophie, Christian Heritage, Nama Beach High). Candy's acceptance into Nancy's mentoring clinic as one of eight serious young adult beginning writers in January 2003 was the springboard that initiated the first actual Gavin Goodfellow manuscript pages. Here are Candy (left) with Nancy (right) in Gambrills, MD, at a "Writeen Crue" weekend retreat, January 20, 2008.
Gwen Ellis, Seaside Creative Services, Literary Agent
Author of the Read and Share Bible, for kids 4-8. The Read and Share Bible is the perfect way to share the amazing joy and wonder of God's Word with the children in your life. The Read and Share Bible makes it easy for you to create long-lasting memories as you encourage a love for reading God's Word in the younger members of your family or ministry. Gwen served as Candy's agent for two years and shepherded Gavin through the publishing process.
Linda Windsor, Author
Linda's contemporary romantic comedies are growing in popularity every day. Don't miss her new series, The Piper Cove Chronicles. With her expertise in the intricacies of writing fiction, she took Candy under her wing in the early manuscript stages and, along with Diane Cook, oversaw the entire creative development of Gavin Goodfellow.
Diane Cook, Word Warrior Ministries
Under the umbrella of Word Warrior Ministries, teams and solo ministers are committed to transforming artists into Word Warriors through a variety of outreach opportunities. Word Warrior Ministries has expanded its 1999 vision from a local Christian drama outreach to an international speaking, teaching and arts ministry. Changing their name from CTM Players to Word Warrior Ministries in 2003, the organization positioned the ministry under Gospel Crusade Fellowship, Bradenton, Florida. Diane is ordained and David is licensed under GCMF. Diane has been Candy's right arm in "everything Gavin" from the very inception of the project.
Marlene Bagnull, Director, Philadelphia and Colorado Christian Writers Conferences
Don't miss the dynamic connections afforded by this site. Marlene Bagnull, director of the Colorado and Philadelphia Christian Writers Conferences, includes a wealth of information for Christian writer's conferences, seminars, critiques, and more. Not only did Marlene edit the Gavin manuscript 3-4 times before going to press, but she has been Candy's writing mentor since the early 1990s. What an encourager! Members of the "Writeen Crue"
Although Candy directs this local writer's critique group, she credits the members with helping her more than she helps them. Special thanks to Wilma Caraway, Betsey Farlow, Barbara Foster, and Marianne Leavitt, who edited the final book manuscript and to Floydie Sabo and Judi Folmsbee for their help with the Interactive Journal.
Georgetown Presbyterian Church, Pastor Mike Williams
Mike is the pastor of the church where Candy and Drew are ordained elders. He says, "Gavin Goodfellow: The Lure of Burnt Swamp is about making Godly choices. This is a good and an encouraging read for seekers of all ages." For his full review, visit Gavin's "Endorsements" page.
Ivy Ulrich-Bonk is the school administrator, for Epworth Christian School, a ministry of Central Worship Center in Laurel, DE, Epworth Christian School. She set the tone for Gavin Goodfellow's use in the classroom by introducing the book into their 8th grade curriculum. Melanie Theofiles, language arts instructor, has written a companion Literature Guide for Gavin.
Lucy Dutton, director of Eagles Nest Christian Academy, was one of the first educators to catch the vision of how Gavin could be used effectively in Christian education. Jessica Hague, language arts teacher, invited Candy to meet with students in four classes upon their completion of Gavin in June 2008.
Greenwood Mennonite School is an extension of the Church and Christian home educating students in a biblical worldview, from an Anabaptist perspective, in Christian values, and in relevant academics to be effective citizens of the world. Jill Deputy, middle school language arts teacher, arranged for Candy to meet with students, parents, and faculty in April 2008. Here are thank-you notes they sent:
Their motto, "Delmarva Christian High School will train students spiritually, academically, and physically to know and accomplish God's will for their lives," fits beautifully with Gavin's message. When approached about holding Gavin's Book Party at their facility on Oct. 6, 2007, the administration and staff responded with enthusiasm.
Gavin is being warmly received by homeschoolers in Delaware and throughout the region. It's a big job trying to get the word out to Christian educators, so if you have connections with any homeschool groups, please help us spread the good news about Gavin!
